There are many kinds of tables though with each kind serving a particular kind of purpose. There is one kind of table which started in England, and that is the drop-leaf table. The most common of the drop-leaf tables is a gateleg table which also has its origins in England. The gateleg table is a kind of furniture that has been useful for many years.
Gateleg Table History
The gateleg table is a type of furniture introduced during the 16th Century of England, and was made of oak during the 16th and 17th Century. The look of a gateleg table is the same as a particular drop-leaf table would look like. The top has 1-2 hinged leaves that fold below the fixed part to dangle vertically when not in use.
The table top of the gateleg table also has a fixed section. There is something though that distinguishes a gateleg table from a typical drop-leaf table. If the table is supported by legs which would swing out from the center, it is a gateleg table; if the table is supported by a bracket when folded up, it is typically a drop-leaf table.
A gateleg table is convenient to many because of its freer leg space in the center. Why? It is because of the large hinged sections, otherwise known as flaps, which have two supports. The flap is also supported on pivoted legs connecting the top and bottom with stretchers making a gate hence the name gateleg was pegged by this structural design.
The gateleg table can be used in many ways
The gateleg table can be used in many ways, so it can be deduced that gateleg tables flexible and can be used in a lot of occasions. They can be used as simple coffee tables, desks, side tables or even night stands. These tables are known to work greatly in whatever place they are set into. They can be good in the garden or even a simple placement during a party at a household. They can also be used in dining and in the living room. Guests would actually prefer this kind of table since the freer leg space allows them to relax with their feet.
Though the gateleg table was popular with the American colonies, there was a variation to this table made in the 18th century and that was the spider-leg table of which the legs were exceptionally slender.
Even with the presence of the spider-leg table and other local variations, the gateleg table still proves to be popular as of current time as this particular table has been used by a lot of households and many families prefer this kind of table for being easy and convenient. One would actually worry the least in getting and availing a gateleg table than any other kinds of tables.
